Since 1960, cars that are more than three years old are required to be inspected on an annual basis. The MOT test is an annual test of automobile safety, roadworthiness aspects and exhaust emissions required in Great Britain for most vehicles that are more than three years old. You are required to have an MOT test each year by law. While the test is designed to ensure that important items on your car meet minimum legal standards it is not a guarantee of your car\'s mechanical condition. There are around 21,000 approved MOT testing stations across the UK. All MOT testers have been on a training course with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) and their test standards are checked regularly. MOT test stations have designated test bays where they conduct the test using a range of equipment which meets the required specification for MOT testing. The standard test procedures are laid out in an inspection manual which the test station should make available on request. If your vehicle fails the MOT test, you will be given a failure document that refers to this manual. You can watch the test from a designated viewing area but you are not allowed to interrupt the tester while he is working.
