What We Know About The Ford E-Transit

With the market turning away from petrol and diesel engines, it was only a matter of time before the humble Transit van got an eco-friendly makeover.

From the outside, there doesn’t look like much has changed with the iconic van, the main difference we can see is a new grille design with blue horizontal bars with the charging point mounted centrally in the grille, below the badge.

Ford is known for their forward-thinking technology and the E-Transit is no exception. It features a suite of active safety tech, including a speed limiter for fleet vehicles and climate control. But the latest addition include the “pro power onboard” option, which enables customers to use their E-Transit as a mobile power source for tools and various other equipment, it’s claimed to be an industry first, and we know it’s going to be one of the most popular additions.

But what we’re keen to talk about is the electric engine. The E-Transit offers an estimated range of around 217 miles, which Ford say is roughly the three times the distance the average European fleet driver covers daily. The battery is mounted under the floor of the E-Transit and boasts a useable capacity of 67kWh. It also features AC and DC fast charging, DC charging at 115kW enables you to charge your van from 15% to 80% in around 35 minutes.

Each customer is given access to the FordPass charging network, with around 160k chargers globally with a good percentage of these being rapid charge.

The electric motor powering the rear wheels gives an output of 265bhp and 317lb ft, leading it to be claimed “the most powerful electric cargo van in Europe.” However, this doesn’t mean the range is decreased. In Eco-drive mode the top speed is regulated and claims to improve range by 8-10%.

It’s not all focus on technology though, the E-Transit has been redesigned to ensure the same cargo pace as a rear-wheel-drive diesel Transit. The payload varies per model but is around 1616kg or 1967kg, so whether you need extra passengers or increased load space, there’s an E-Transit set up for you.

In short, the new Ford E-Transit offers a powerful combination of range and power with a focus on technology that makes it hard to beat in the e-Van market. It’s coming to showrooms in 2022, and it’s sure to be one of the most popular Transits yet.
