How Far Can The New EcoBoost Go?

If you’ve bought a Ford model over recent years then you have probably had the option of an EcoBoost engine. Ford has been developing its EcoBoost technology over recent years and the engines offer a great combination of power, fuel economy and low emissions. Indeed, the 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine has just won the 2014 International Engine of the Year award.

Now, Ford has launched an even more impressive version of its EcoBoost engine with a bold claim: its new Fiesta Zetec S Red and Black editions have a greater specific power output than a Bugatti Veyron. We look at Ford’s EcoBoost technology and why you should choose this new EcoBoost engine.

According to figures from Ford, around 30 per cent of Fiesta customers pick the 1.0-litre Ecoboost engine, which is now available in three states of tune: 99bhp, 124bhp and 138bhp.

The basic 99bhp EcoBoost engine is one of the most powerful and cleanest engines in its class. It can power the Fiesta from 0-62mph in 11.2 seconds and has a top speed of 112mph. This is all while offering economy of 65.7 miles per gallon and CO2 emissions of just 99g/km, meaning you won’t pay any road tax.

Ford launches two special edition Fiesta models in September with a new version of its EcoBoost engine. The Fiesta Zetec S Red and Black editions will be the first to get a higher-output version of the 1.0-litre three-cylinder Ecoboost engine, tweaked to 138bhp thanks to variable cam timing, higher turbo boost and direct injection.

Ford says that the new Fiesta specials are the most powerful 1.0-litre cars in the world. The extra output means that they can do 0-62mph in 9.0sec and will boast a top speed of 125mph. This is all while averaging 63 miles per gallon and emitting just 104g/km of CO2.

Andrew Fraser, Ford’s European gasoline calibration manager, said: “This new 138bhp 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine now delivers more than twice the power on a litre-for-litre basis than its predecessor – the 99bhp 1.6-litre engine that powered the sporty Fiesta S just 10 years ago. I believe this engine sets a new benchmark for power combined with fuel efficiency from a small petrol engine.”

If you’re looking to buy a 1.0 litre car then the Ford EcoBoost engine compares favourably to other models.

The Peugeot 107 Active 3 door also has a 1.0 litre engine that’s inferior to the EcoBoost. This only generates 68 bhp with a top speed of 98 mph.

Both of these cars have less than half the BHP, and take almost double the time to get to 60MPH compared to the latest Ecoboost engine that you find in the new Fiesta Red and Black editions.
