Nissan and Ecobat to give used EV batteries a second life beyond the car
02 May, 2024
Nissan and Ecobat Solutions UK Ltd have teamed up to give used electric vehicle batteries a second life in the UK. By working together, they aim to locate, recover, repair, recycle, or repurpose EV batteries from Nissan LEAF cars no longer in use. This partnership combines Nissan's expertise in batteries with Ecobat's recycling knowledge to create a sustainable circular energy economy.
With the project supporting Nissan's goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, the agreement will explore ways to commercialize the process of handling EV batteries for second life usage. Nissan may also offer these products with an official manufacturer warranty. Alan Low, EV Battery Circular Economy Manager at Nissan, emphasized the importance of recovering batteries in good condition for reuse.
Batteries identified for a second life will be transported to Ecobat's base in Darlaston, near Birmingham, for further evaluation and potential applications like Battery Energy Storage Systems or mobile power charging systems. Those not meeting requirements will be safely recycled. Tom Seward, EU Key Accounts Director at Ecobat, highlighted their expertise in handling high voltage batteries and ensuring compliance with UK regulations.
Ecobat's UK Diagnostic and Disassembly Centre has already processed thousands of batteries and will be expanding with a new Li-Ion recycling facility this year, further enhancing their capacity for processing used batteries in the UK.
